The Friday’s bombing at Peshawar’s Khyber Bazaar was the latest in a series of recent bombings across north-western Pakistan. According to officials a suicide bomber travelling in a vehicle full of explosives had carried out the attack.p1

The bomber used about 50 kilograms (110 lbs) of explosives in the attack laced with bearings and shells to cause maximum damage in a crowded civilian location, senior police officer Shafqat Malik said.

“A suicide bomber blew himself up as the car was next to a passenger bus passing through the market,” Shafqat Malik added.

All of the victims were civilians and a number of them were women and children.

The attack was the deadliest one in Pakistan since last March when a suicide bomber destroyed a crowded mosque in Jamrud area of the Khyber tribal agency.

p3Doctors at the nearby Lady Reading hospital, where the wounded victims were shifted, have warned that the death toll could rise as many of the injured were in a critical condition.

“My happiness suddenly turned into grief”, said an injured Zarin Bibi in the Lady Reading hospital who lost her husband, two sons and a daughter in the blast. Zarin Bibi was going for a wedding ceremony along with her family. Witnesses also described how bystanders desperately tried to free survivors trapped in vehicles overturned by the force of the explosion.

The government blamed Waziristan-based Taliban insurgents for the attack. Interior Minister Rehman Malik said the nation has no option but to attack militant strongholds in South Waziristan.p5

“All roads are leading to South Waziristan. We will have to proceed. We have no other option but to carry out an operation in South Waziristan”, Rehman Malik told media.

Malik also said a suspect had been arrested in Monday’s suicide attack at the office of the UN’s World Food Program in Islamabad. He said the man was alleged to have given the attacker shelter.

“The attackers are the enemies of humanity. We will not rest until these enemies of humanity are completely eliminated,” said Mian Iftikhar Hussain, the NWFP information minister.

Hours earlier, suspected gunmen in Peshawar had attacked vehicles being used to take supplies to Nato forces in Afghanistan, setting them on fire and destroying them.

p4Peshawar has been a frequent target of militants linked to the Taliban and Al-Qaeda, who are waging a violent insurgency against the Pakistani state. Taliban militants vowed to avenge the killing of Baitullah Mehsud.

On September 26 a car bomb killed six people on a road leading to the main army cantonment in Peshawar.

Over the past two years, more than 2,500 people have been killed in suicide bomb blasts across the country. Last April, Pakistani troops launched a military assault designed to dislodge Pakistani Taliban from the northwestern Swat valley which forced around to million people to flee the region.

There has been an increase in US drone attacks on Pakistan’s tribal belt recently, as the United States tries to stem the flow of militants waging an insurgency against about 100,000 foreign troops stationed across the border.peshawarblast2_reut608

The Taliban claimed responsibility for a suicide attack on Monday on a UN compound in Islamabad that killed five aid workers and closed UN offices nationwide in the worst attack in the capital in months.
